Moving to Edmonton Checklist

You’ve made the move to the City of Champions (or the City of Festivals, depending on who you ask). Congratulations!

To ensure your transition is smooth (and fine-free), here is your ultimate Moving to Edmonton Checklist for 2026.

Phase 1: The First 7 Days (Immediate Priorities)

Do not put these off. Getting your ID and heat set up is Priority #1.

1. (AHCIP) via the official Alberta Health Care insurance plan online portal or registry office

Health coverage is not automatic the second you cross the border.

  • The Rule: You must apply within 3 months of arrival.
  • The Coverage Gap:
    • Moving from within Canada (BC, ON, etc.): Your old province covers you for the month you move plus two more months. Your Alberta coverage begins on the 1st day of the 3rd month.
    • Moving from Outside Canada: Your coverage typically begins on your date of arrival (once approved).

2. Master the “EPCOR” Utility Game

Edmonton is unique. EPCOR is the heart of the city’s infrastructure.

  • Water & Waste: This is always EPCOR. You cannot choose a competitor.
  • Power & Gas: You can choose.
    • Default: If you do nothing, you get the Regulated Rate Option (RRO) for electricity.
    • Choice: You can sign a fixed-rate contract with competitive retailers (like ATCO, Direct Energy, or EPCOR’s own retail arm “Encor”) to avoid price spikes.
  • Action: Call EPCOR 2 weeks before you move to set up your account. If you are buying, you take possession of the bins (carts) already at the house.

3. Get Your “Arc Card” (Transit)

If you plan to use the LRT or bus:

  • The System: Edmonton uses the Arc Card, a regional smart fare card that works in St. Albert, Sherwood Park, and Edmonton.
  • The Cap: In 2026, there is a monthly “fare cap” (approx $102). Once you spend that amount, the rest of the month is free. You don’t need to buy a monthly pass upfront; just tap and go.

You are settled. Now, let’s make you legal.

4. Vehicle Registration & Insurance

  • The Deadline: You legally have 90 days to switch your registration and insurance to Alberta.
  • Step A: The “Pink Card”. You must get Alberta auto insurance first. You cannot register your car with your BC or Ontario policy.
  • Step B: Out of Province Inspection. Unless your car is brand new or you are moving from BC/SK/MB (New West Partnership exemptions may apply), your vehicle likely needs a mechanical inspection.
    • Budget: $300–$500 for the inspection + repairs.
  • Step C: The Registry. Bring your proof of ownership, new insurance, and inspection form to get your Alberta plates.

5. Download the “WasteWise” App

Edmonton’s waste system is strict.

  • The Bins: You will likely have a black cart (garbage), green cart (food scraps), and blue bag (recycling).
  • The Schedule: Pickup days vary by neighbourhood.
  • The App: Download WasteWise. It tells you exactly when to put out the bins and, more importantly, sends you notifications about “Big Bin Events” (for old furniture) and seasonal yard waste days.

6. Driver’s Licence Exchange

  • The Deadline: 90 days.
  • The Swap: If you have a valid licence from another Canadian province, the US, or countries with reciprocal agreements (like the UK or Australia), you can usually swap it for an Alberta Class 5 without a road test.
  • The Cost: Approx. $93 for a 5-year term.

7. Find a Family Doctor

  • The Resource: Use Alberta Find a Doctor (albertafindadoctor.ca) or the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta website.
  • The Reality: In 2026, many clinics are at capacity. Call Health Link (811) for advice on clinics accepting new patients in your zone.

8. Sign Up for Emergency Alerts

  • Action: Sign up for Alberta Emergency Alerts and the City of Edmonton’s Parking Ban Notification email list. If you leave your car on a bus route during a parking ban, you will get a ticket (approx. $250) and potentially be towed.

What is the difference between Epcor and Encor?

EPCOR is the utility company that provides the physical water/power connection. Encor is their competitive retail brand that sells fixed-rate plans. You can buy your power from Encor, ATCO, or others, but your water bill will always come from EPCOR.

Do I really need an Out of Province inspection?

If your vehicle is coming from BC, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba, you might be exempt if the vehicle is strictly for personal use and you meet specific criteria (New West Partnership). For Ontario or Atlantic Canada, an inspection is almost always mandatory for vehicles older than 1 year.

How do I get internet set up?

The two main infrastructure owners are Telus (PureFibre) and Rogers (formerly Shaw). Most areas in Edmonton have fibre access. Check the “Service Availability” tool on their websites before signing a lease if high-speed internet is critical for your job.

Is the tap water safe?

Yes. Edmonton’s water is treated at the E.L. Smith or Rossdale Water Treatment Plants and is consistently rated among the best in the world. It is sourced from the North Saskatchewan River.

When do I need to shovel my snow?

Edmonton bylaws require you to clear your sidewalk down to the pavement within 48 hours of a snowfall ending. If you don’t, the city can clear it and charge you the cost plus a fine.
